UMass Hockey Team Beats Alaska Anchorage 11-2
No. 11 University of Massachusetts’ hockey team recorded a resounding 11-2 victory over Alaska Anchorage at the Mullins Center on Friday night. This historic performance set a new program record for the most goals scored against a Division I opponent. The Minutemen improved to 10-4-1, while the Seawolves dropped to 6-12-1 for the season.
UMass head coach Greg Carvel praised his team’s offensive prowess but expressed concern about their defense during certain periods of the game. Carvel highlighted the standout performance of goalie Jackson Irving, who made impressive saves despite facing a 5-on-3 power play situation in his collegiate debut. Carvel also commended multiple players for their multi-point contributions in the game.
Freshman Aydar Suniev led the team with a career-high five points, followed by junior Ryan Ufko, who achieved a career-best of four points. Other notable contributors included Scott Morrow, Jack Musa, Dans Locmelis, and Taylor Makar, among others.
UMass took the lead early in the game, with Michael Cameron and Aydar Suniev scoring in the first period. The team continued their dominating performance in the subsequent periods, with Ufko, Cam O’Neill, and other players making significant contributions to widen the score gap.
The Minutemen finished the game with a 37-26 advantage in shots and a strong 3-for-4 performance on the power play, along with a perfect 3-for-3 record on the penalty kill.
Cole Brady and Jackson Irving delivered solid performances in goal, with Brady making 18 saves before being replaced by Irving, who successfully defended the team’s lead in his collegiate debut.
The teams are set to face each other again on December 9, at the Mullins Center for the conclusion of their weekend series.
