Homer the opossum has finally found a new home at the Oregon Zoo after a long and eventful journey. His mother, Grubby, stowed away in a cargo container bound for Homer, Alaska earlier this year. After evading wildlife officials and gaining media attention, she was eventually found and taken to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage with her new family, including Homer.
Homer, one of Grubby’s joeys, recently arrived at the Oregon Zoo, where he is settling in behind the scenes in the ambassador animal area. Despite his adventurous journey, he is adjusting well and enjoying his new surroundings. Opossums, the only marsupials found in North America, are considered invasive in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, but they are already well-established in these regions.
Homer’s caretaker, Eliza Lee, hopes that he will soon be able to meet visitors as a representative of his species, which is often misunderstood. Despite the common fear of opossums, Lee describes Homer as having a sweet and gentle personality, and she believes that he can help to change people’s perceptions of opossums in a fun and engaging way.
