Bank of America customers faced significant issues accessing their accounts on Wednesday, with many reporting problems viewing their balances. According to Downdetector, reports of outages spiked around 12:45 p.m. ET, as users expressed concerns about seeing zero balances or being unable to log in entirely.
Bank of America confirmed the issue in a statement to CNN, acknowledging that “some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today.” The bank assured customers that the issues were being addressed and were “largely resolved,” but did not provide details on what caused the disruption. It’s unclear when all systems will be fully operational.
Some CNN employees with Bank of America accounts reported being unable to access their online banking, while others saw an error message indicating that account balances “may be temporarily unavailable.”
One customer on Downdetector shared their frustration, noting, “Five accounts show zero balance, over 20K.” Another user mentioned their inability to log in, though their spouse could access the account, only to find no balance displayed.
While some balances appeared to be unavailable, one customer sarcastically remarked that their debts were still visible. Bank of America has since apologized for the inconvenience.
The issues at Bank of America on Wednesday left many customers frustrated and alarmed, particularly due to the widespread reports of zero account balances. Social media and outage tracking platforms, such as Downdetector, saw a significant spike in complaints, with many customers unsure if their funds were affected or simply not displayed correctly.
The outage appeared to impact both the bank’s website and mobile app, with users unable to view balances, perform transactions, or even log in. Although the bank has not revealed the exact cause of the issue, some experts speculate it may have been a technical glitch, possibly linked to routine maintenance or a system overload. However, these are only assumptions, as Bank of America has yet to offer a formal explanation for the outage.
