Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend Program Opens for Applications

In four days, eligible residents of Alaska will have the opportunity to apply for the state’s Permanent Fund Dividend program for the year 2024. The annual application period for this program, which provides direct payments to Alaskans based on the state’s mineral revenues, will be open from January 1, 2024, to March 31, 2024.

It is important to note that even if a person has received a payment in the past, they must apply during the application window to receive a payment for the current year. There are a few exemptions that allow residents to apply outside of the regular application period, but for the most part, applications must be submitted between January and March to be eligible for a payment. Additionally, the status of an application can be viewed on the program’s website.

To qualify for the Permanent Fund Dividend program, applicants must intend to remain a resident of Alaska indefinitely and must not be convicted felons, among other requirements. Applications for the program can be submitted online or through a paper form.

The amount that a resident receives from the Permanent Fund Dividend varies by year. In 2023, the checks sent out were worth $1,312 and distribution began in October.

According to Alaska Department of Revenue Commissioner Adam Crum, in 2023, over 8,000 more applications were processed compared to the previous year. He also stated that the 2023 PFD will inject nearly $1 billion into the state’s economy and directly into the hands of Alaskans. More information about exemptions to the standard application period and other details about the state program can be found on the Alaska Department of Revenue’s website.
